1962 Poster

General Points

  • Location and Dates: Chile 30th May - 19th June 1962 (Estadio Nacional in Santiago, official capacity 74,000 seated, up to 80,000. The stadium at Viña del Mar, (18,037) originally called El Tranque, later became known as Sausalito. The actual spelling was Sauzalito, but out of similarity, the stadium was “renamed” after the town Sausalito in California (USA), which is a partner city of Viña del Mar. As it is, the spelling Sausalito has become accepted now. The stadium at Arica, Estadio Monumental de Carlos Dittborn Pinto (17,786), was named in memory of the late head of the Chilean FA, who brought the tournament to Chile and died 33 days before it began. The stadium at Rancagua was called Estadio Braden Copper Company (18,000), and was later renamed El Teniente [The Lieutenant] during the government of Salvador Allende).
  • Decided at FIFA Congress in Lisbon, 9th June 1956. Chile out-voted Argentina 32-11. West Germany withdrew before the vote.
  • Entries deadline 15th December 1959. 56 teams entered, 49 actually played (8 for the first time). Romania, Canada, Sudan, UAR (was a joint association of Egypt and Syria) and Indonesia withdrew.
  • Qualifications drawn 28th February 1960 in Basel.
  • Finals drawn 18th January 1962 at the Carrera Hotel in Santiago.
  • Participating teams: Argentina [10], Brazil [1], Bulgaria, Chile [3], Colombia, Czechoslovakia, England, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, Uruguay [12], USSR, West Germany, Yugoslavia. According to FIFA the seeded teams were chosen in "consideration of geographical and sportative interests".
  • The reference 'Groups' as opposed to 'Pools', used officially for the first time.
  • General note: To stop play-off games goal difference was used for the first time to determine the final group positions, if teams finished level on points, then drawing of lots. The first team to benefit from this was England..
  • The team formations listed below are shown for simplicity as 4-2-4. This is on purpose and I know it is a fiction, but I think it gives a better idea of players' field positioning than the traditional 2-3-5 (in all reference books of the time) or any other world cup web site representation.

Alberto Fouilloux, had his leg in plaster after this game.
The Chile-Italy brawl, which eventually came to be known as the "Battle of Santiago", was one of the most infamous matches in World Cup history, overshadowed only by the even more disgraceful "Battle of Bern" and the Spanish-Italian "war" in 1934. It was prompted by a tactless article by an Italian journalist that generally cast doubt on Chilean parentage. The Italian players met open hostility from the crowd and the Chilean team. Italy's Ferrini was sent off for a foul, hacking down Landa. Then Chile's outside left Leonel Sánchez, the son of a professional boxer, broke Humberto Maschio's nose with a beautiful left hook admired worldwide on television, but missed by the linesman standing only a few feet away. Italian defender Mario David was not so lucky: His flying kick at Sánchez got him sent off. Chile scored two goals, Italy were eliminated, and the hosts were through to the quarter-finals. [AR]
